How to get there:

Due to its remote location, Koh Lipe has managed to maintain its natural beauty and is often considered a hidden gem among travellers seeking a less-crowded island experience. Exactly for the same reason though, reaching the island will require a bit more effort. Travelling to Koh Lipe requires a combination of land and sea transportation. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to reach this beautiful island:

Via Thailand

  • Coming from abroad, you'll first need to fly to Thailand. The most common entry points are Bangkok, Phuket, or Krabi, as they have international airports with frequent flights from major cities around the world.

  • From these airports, you'll need to take a domestic flight to either Hat Yai or Trang.

  • Once you’re there, you'll need to travel to the coastal town of Pak Bara which can be done by taxi, minivan, or bus. The journey takes approximately 2-3 hours from Hat Yai and around 1-2 hours from Trang.

  • Once you reach Pak Bara, you'll take a ferry to Koh Lipe; the journey usually takes around 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on sea conditions.

Via Malaysia

A second route to the island (slightly easier and less timely in my opinion) is via Malaysia.

  • You can start your journey by flying into Langkawi International Airport; Langkawi is a beautiful archipelago on the western coast of Malaysia, approximately 30 kilometres across Koh Lipe.

  • From Langkawi, there are several ferry operators that run daily services between the two islands and make the journey straightforward and convenient.

  • Bear in mind that since you are crossing the international maritime border between Malaysia and Thailand, you will need to go through immigration procedures both when leaving Langkawi and arriving at Koh Lipe. Make sure to have all necessary travel documents ready.
